In most German families the meal on Christmas Eve is a rather modest one often including frankfurters with potato salad, sauerkraut, or fish, fondue or raclette. For dessert gingerbread, biscuits and Christmas Stollen are served, followed by the exchange of presents.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day on the other hand are usually celebrated in a festive manner with close family and friends. A Christmas goose or venison with red cabbage, potato dumplings and cranberries or alternatively, carp with boiled potatoes are served. Of course, ginger bread, biscuits and Christmas Stollen are served again as dessert, along with coffee.
