In most German families the meal on Christmas Eve is a rather modest one often including frankfurters with potato salad, sauerkraut, or fish, fondue or raclette. For dessert gingerbread, biscuits and Christmas Stollen are served, followed by the exchange of presents.

A Christmas goose or venison with red cabbage, potato dumplings and cranberries or alternatively, carp with boiled potatoes are served.
