Originating from the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountain) region in Eastern Germany, meticulously hand-crafted and decorated wooden decorations such as Nussknackers (nutcrackers), Räuchermännchen (incense smokers), Schwibbogen (Christmas arch) and Weihnachtspyramiden (Christmas pyramid) are quintessential parts of German families' festive repertoire. The town of Seiffen and its surrounding areas, situated in the heart of the Ore Mountains, have been the centre of the festive wooden toy and decoration manufacturing for centuries, and are fondly referred to as the "Spielzeugwinkel". As the ore reserves dried up in the 16th century, the local population turned their talents to wood carving, thus creating one of the most iconic and enduring images of German Christmas.
